Atlanta, GA – Oct 5th – Rick Curry served his country for more than a decade, on tours of duty that spanned the globe including the front lines during the Gulf War. He saw it all and the collection of experiences led to PTSD and a bout with cancer.
A few years after his service, mysterious health conditions were ongoing, leading to finding him comatose in a VA hospital for four days in 2002. For years following, there were no concrete explanations for the pain he was suffering. Then in 2009, he was diagnosed with Stage3c Melanoma – it had spread to his lymph nodes. Five surgeries in 6 weeks got him past the worse. It’s now 14 years as a cancer survivor, and nearly twenty as a retired combat veteran.
The physical and mental toll had all led to serious sleep issues, “if you can’t sleep, life sucks”, says Rick. “You’re miserable, on edge, you snap, lose your temper”. His mind would race, filled with horrific memories – “I’ve been shot, run over and thrown out of airplanes” – nights filled with erratic sleep patterns and fuzzy days that required naps.
