The time is 1:30 AM.
You’ve abruptly woken up from your slumber desiring something sweet, delectable, and chilled.
You creep down your staircase… tiptoeing from the bedroom to your kitchen.
You open your freezer. Ahhhh. The cold air hits your face, and your eyes land on the holy grail of desserts…ice cream!
You get out your spoon and prepare to dig into its gooey goodness. You open the tunnel – Here comes the train!
“OUCHHH!!!” In an instant, an excruciating pain surges from your mouth to your brain.
You wonder, “how can such a delectable treat cause such pain?!”
Fortunately, you’re not alone. A new dentistry study found that one in eight people suffer from over-sensitive teeth. Discomfort from sensitive teeth can vary depending on how severe an individual’s case is. According to the Oral Health Foundation, those with sensitive teeth may experience only mild pain when eating certain foods like ice cream. In contrast, others may experience more severe pain and discomfort.
What’s the solution? Toothpaste – powerful enough to target plaque and promote the mouth’s overall health while being gentle on the teeth and gums. Toothpaste for sensitivity utilizes ingredients specially designed to strengthen the tooth surface and block the microtubules in your teeth that lead to painful reactions and sensitivity.
But with so many options on the market, finding the best one can be overwhelming. So, after extensive research, our editors compared leading toothpastes for sensitive teeth to help you make a more informed decision.

Backed by renowned dentist Dr. Jonathan B. Levine and co-founded by Lenny Kravitz, Twice Oral Wellness Toothpaste is packed with scientifically proven, gentle ingredients that help build up protection for sensitive teeth and prevent future pain. It typically takes two weeks to build up enough protection and work effectively on the teeth.
Hero ingredient, potassium nitrate, blocks the transmission of pain from your teeth to your brain. It calms your teeth’s nerve activity, so you feel less discomfort when eating ice cream, drinking hot beverages or eating sweet and sour foods. Sodium fluoride, potassium nitrate’s partner-in-crime, works like a shield to protect your dentin and strengthen your enamel. The ingredient hydroxyapatite works behind the scenes to prevent cavities from forming.
Twice toothpaste also focuses on balancing your oral microbiome which is essential to maintaining optimal oral health. Twice is designed to increase good bacteria in your mouth and reduce the bad, making it a highly effective solution to keeping your oral microbiome healthy.
As a cavity prevention toothpaste, Twice also ensures that you can eat the foods you want without sensitivity, while strengthening your enamel and restoring balance to your oral microbiome. It combines scientifically proven, effective oral health and enamel repairing ingredients with vitamins, aloe vera and antioxidants. It’s also cruelty-free, vegan, non-GMO and SLS Free (sodium lauryl sulfate-free).
Plus, the whole family will be a fan of the refreshingly delicious flavors and ultra-fresh breath the toothpaste creates. Twice’s four flavor options include cooling spearmint eucalyptus, invigorating wintergreen peppermint, charcoal icy mint and calming vanilla lavender mint.
Perhaps the best part about Twice’s Oral Wellness Toothpaste is how easy they make it to take care of your oral microbiome through its monthly delivery subscription program. Oral wellness kits consist of two packs of Oral Wellness Toothpaste and are delivered every 2 months.
All kit subscriptions are 20% off each time, no matter how many times you order. And they are 100% customizable – which means you can change, pause or skip your delivery anytime.

hello Antiplaque and Whitening Fluoride Free Toothpaste aims to naturally whiten your teeth and brush away plaque with safe, all-natural minerals. This gentle, vegan toothpaste is formulated with farm-grown peppermint, tea tree oil and moisturizing coconut oil. Not all toothpastes are created equally. That’s why it is super important to use an all-natural product. Not only will you be able to enjoy your occasional sweet treat, icy drink or other foods and beverages without making your mouth twinge, but you are preventing further sensitivity and dental erosion from occurring as well.
Utilizing ingredients like Calcium Carbonate and Titanium Dioxide, this toothpaste will effectively enhance the whiteness of your teeth, safely remove plaque when brushing and gently polish away surface stains. It’s also fluoride-free, dye-free, SLS-free, paraben-free, triclosan-free and gluten-free.
However, if you aren’t into the overwhelmingly minty taste of most whitening toothpastes, you most likely won’t love this option from hello. Customers have expressed that the peppermint flavor packs a strong punch.

Sensodyne ProNamel Gentle Whitening Toothpaste for Sensitive Teeth effectively cleans and polishes away stains to promote fresh breath and healthy teeth. It protects you from pain triggers as it gently restores the natural whiteness of your teeth. It is formulated without phthalates, parabens and aluminum.
However, this toothpaste also contains polyethylene glycol (PEG). While PEG gives toothpaste squeezability, it has been linked to endocrine disruption and is the first ingredient found in antifreeze. We don’t want our toothpaste to freeze, but we also don’t want to ingest antifreeze.
Customers question if this gentle whitening toothpaste is worth its price point of $11.69 (for 2-count 4 oz toothpaste).
Pros
Cons
Sensodyne ProNamel Gentle Whitening Toothpaste is an effective toothpaste that cleans and polishes away stains for fresh breath and healthy teeth. However, given the fact that it includes a harmful ingredient, you can find a better solution elsewhere.

Colgate Sensitive Toothpaste Maximum Strength with Whitening works to restore your teeth’s natural whiteness while protecting against future sensitivity. This toothpaste utilizes the FDA-allowed, anti-sensitivity active ingredient potassium nitrate, which penetrates deep into the teeth to desensitize the nerve. Its fresh mint flavor provides long-lasting freshness to protect you from bad breath.
However, this Colgate Sensitive Toothpaste contains an ingredient that we can’t quite get behind. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is a foaming agent found in many toothpastes on the market. While SLS may be marketed as an all-natural ingredient due to its being derived from coconut oil, this agent becomes toxin contaminated during its manufacturing process. Some of the main concerns associated with SLS in toothpaste are possible irritation of the mouth and gums, dryness of the mouth and skin, canker sores and loss of taste.
When it comes down to choosing a toothpaste, it makes the most sense to select one that is sodium lauryl sulfate-free to avoid the potential downsides and maximize the oral health benefits of toothpaste.
Pros
Cons
Though Colgate is a reputable brand in the oral wellness industry, we can’t quite get behind this toothpaste. These possible side effects of sodium lauryl sulfate aren’t worth it for a little foam, if you ask us.

Davids Sensitive+Whitening Nano-Hydroxyapatite toothpaste is a new breakthrough in sensitive relief oral care products designed to help repair the teeth and block tooth nerves. Nano-hydroxyapatite was first developed by NASA to help repair and strengthen the teeth of astronauts returning from zero-gravity environments.
While Davids approach to repairing teeth enamel and relieving sensitivity is innovative, its toothpaste does feature two alarming ingredients which we would like to call your attention to. The first is carrageenan, an ingredient derived from red seaweed which is used to thicken toothpaste. Some scientific findings claim that it can contribute to inflammation of the gastrointestinal region, possibly resulting in ulcers or even colon cancer. If you’re vegan or cruelty-free, you should know that these findings came about from testing on laboratory animals.
The second ingredient is calcium carbonate (limestone abrasive), one of several abrasive agents that help clean teeth and remove stains. Customers with especially sensitive teeth have expressed that this toothpaste has made their teeth even more sensitive than before, even causing enamel abrasion and making their teeth more vulnerable to bacteria and plaque.
While Davids Sensitive+Whitening Nano-Hydroxyapatite toothpaste proved to be successful as a teeth whitener for some customers, if your teeth are especially sensitive, you may need to use this product in smaller amounts.
Pros
Cons
While Davids Sensitive+Whitening Nano-Hydroxyapatite toothpaste utilizes a unique approach to repairing the enamel and relieving tooth sensitivity, we can’t get behind its use of carrageenan and calcium carbonate. If your teeth are especially sensitive, you may need to use this product in smaller amounts.
