It all started with a toothache.

My son complained his tooth was really hurting, so I got a little anxious. I brought him to the dentist, who took one look at his teeth and shook her head.

Without hesitation, our dentist asked, “How long has he been taking gummy vitamins?”.

Apparently, those cute little gummy bears were the MAIN CAUSE OF HIS CAVITIES.

For the last six months, my son has been taking a gummy vitamin every morning.
These kids’ multivitamins seemed great — he liked the taste, I liked the idea, and I figured if they’re taken by so many families, those gummies have to be good for him.

I didn’t realize how wrong I was!!!

It turns out the average gummy vitamin is just candy in disguise —  In fact, the gummy vitamin I had been giving our kids included TWO TEASPOONS OF ADDED SUGAR. That’s a shocking amount of sugar — and the more I studied, the more I learned of the potential downsides of gummy vitamins: increased cavities, rotting teeth, mood instability, hyperactivity, obesity, bad health habits, and so much more that can be exacerbated by added sugar and junk.

And what’s worse is most gummy brands don’t require just one gummy. Rather your kids are supposed to eat four or five gummies per day just to get one serving — which means the bad stuff just compounds.

And it turns out GUMMY VITAMINS ARE SO UNSTABLE when it comes to holding vitamins that 80% of gummy vitamins tested don’t even include the nutrients included on the label, so more often than not, you’re not even getting what you think you are — I couldn’t believe what I was learning.

On a mission to find a better multivitamin for my children

After learning the many problems with sugar-filled gummies, I set out to find a better-quality children’s multivitamin.

After doing tons of research and talking with pediatricians, dentists, and experts, I created the Healthy Children Happy Parents Checklist. This handy guide is how I reviewed tons of different children’s multivitamins to find the perfect one for my kids…and skip the gummies.

SPOILER ALERT: Hiya was the only multivitamin that checked all the boxes on my checklist.

Here’s what you need to know:

The Potential Danger of Gummy Vitamins

Those cute little vitamin gummy animals can be really bad for your kids…and really good for your kids’ dentist.

The problem stems from the gelatinous material, glucose, and citric acid common in gummies, which can be especially detrimental to teeth if a child doesn’t brush soon after taking them, and frankly, what child brushes their teeth each time after eating four or five gummy vitamins.

I usually give my kids their vitamins before school, so that can be eight hours of harmful ingredients stuck in kid’s teeth for the whole day.

TOO MUCH SUGAR AND JUNK INGREDIENTS

The typical children’s vitamin includes five grams of added sugar, which is like giving your child a piece of Halloween candy every single morning when you’re trying to be healthy.

According to the AHA, five grams of added sugar is more than 20% the daily recommended MAXIMUM per day…in a children’s vitamin. That’s why I suggest all parents look for a vitamin with zero added sugar to ensure low levels of added sugar.

In addition, many gummy vitamins include difficult to pronounce chemicals, pork-based gelatin, cheap binding agents, and weird dyes designed to look good — all of which can be harmful.

For example, you may have heard of BPA, but have you also heard of BPS? The Consumer Product Safety Commission noticed that it may threaten your child’s growth and development, and it’s just one of the ingredients that can sometimes be found in the children’s supplements you see on your grocery store shelves.

When their vitamins are not made for them

Made For Profit, Not With Care

Today’s kids’ multivitamins on the supermarket shelves are mass-produced and not necessarily made just with your child in mind. For example, what if your child has a dietary restriction or an allergy?

LOOK FOR A VITAMIN TESTED BY THIRD PARTIES.

Did you know that a major brand of gummy vitamins was just recalled for heavy metals? That’s why you should always make sure your vitamins are tested by a 3rd-party lab to find harmful ingredients like heavy metals, allergens, and pathogens.

This is a particular problem with sugar-filled gummies, which were originally designed as fruit snacks and never meant to hold vitamins — making them an awful delivery device for kids.

So try to avoid a gummy and instead choose a chewable vitamin third-party tested and made in a cGMP-compliant facility, which is a reliable and trustworthy source for product manufacturing.

Synthetic VS organic

What the vitamins are made with is just as important as the junk it includes. Is it made primarily with synthetic, impossible-to-pronounce chemicals? Or does it include a blend of ORGANIC FRUITS AND VEGETABLES?

When we talked to health-conscious parents about finding the perfect vitamin, they told us over and over: choose the multi-made with a blend of fruits and vegetables and ingredients you can pronounce, not just synthetic junk.

This vitamin was the only one that checked all the boxes…

After an exhaustive search, I was thrilled to find Hiya Children’s Multivitamins.

Hiya is PEDIATRICIAN-APPROVED and made with ZERO grams of ADDED SUGAR. Plus it’s not a gummy but instead is a chewable vitamin, meaning it’s been pressed with a blend of 12 organic farm-fresh fruits and vegetables, then supercharged with 15 essential vitamins and minerals.

And what’s amazing is Hiya individually sourced each of these vitamins in optimal forms so you can be confident you’re filling in the most common dietary gaps. That means zinc, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin D — all in forms I researched deeply to make sure it’s what’s ideal for kids based on what we now know.

And it’s not just those vitamins — they also include B12, riboflavin, thiamin, vitamin E, manganese, folate, biotin, calcium, iodine, selenium, and more — so I can be confident my kids are filling in the gaps they may be missing in their diets…all in forms I trust.

Plus Hiya is naturally sweetened with monk fruit — a natural sweetener found in melons and 100x sweeter than sugar, plus a touch of mannitol, another natural sweetener found in pumpkins and strawberries — which is so much better than all that unnecessary added sugar!

And despite the zero sugar, Hiya tastes absolutely fantastic. I’m not sure how they do it, but my kids are obsessed with the sweet taste and consistently ask for more.

And oh yeah — the best part?  While other gummies require four or five per day, Hiya is supercharged to be just one a day — which is so much easier for me to monitor to make sure my little ones are getting what they need.

What else is great about Hiya is the packaging. Your first month they give you a refillable glass bottle to decorate and personalize with stickers they send, so it’s not your typical plastic tub of vitamins. Then they send eco-friendly refills for you to pour into your bottle — so it’s not just good for you, it’s good for the environment.

Here are some pics of kids absolutely falling in love with Hiya and their personalized bottle.

I’ve recommended Hiya to hundreds of families and friends and I always hear the same thing — Hiya is truly a hit!

Real Reviews From Real Customers:

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“My 5 year old loves them and asks for them every morning! I feel good about it being organic and I love that the refills are eco-friendly. It’s also really nice that she only has to take 1/day.” – Mandi B.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“I am a firm believer in supplements (vitamins) so when my daughter started to get a little picky with her food I decided it was time to find a kids vitamin for her. I have bought a few brands of vitamins and with each one I noticed how it seemed as if she just ate a bowl full of candy. She was bouncing off the walls and she became moody. So after I noticed this, I just decided to stop giving her a daily vitamin. When I first saw an ad for Hiya, I was really excited that it was made with Whole Foods and no added sugars and I had to try it. It’s only been a couple of weeks and I am completely in love with the brand, as is my daughter. Every morning she is just so excited to eat her vitamin for the day and she is NOT bouncing off the walls!!! I also have a peace of mind knowing she is getting her essential vitamins to keep her healthy-especially during these times.” – Amanda K.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“So glad these are as kid pleasing as advertised. I was very skeptical that my kids would go for these but they totally love them! I’m so happy to give them a single chewable that still has all the forms of vitamins that I prefer for them. Plus they were SO EXCITED about the special yellow bottles and the stickers to decorate them.” – Grace M.
