According to detailed tests run by ConsumerLab,* the majority of vitamin supplements it reviewed, including children’s vitamins, were found to have troubling issues — and the biggest offender were gummies.
Results showed that twelve major brands tested included ingredients not included on their nutritional label. For example, two popular brands of gummy vitamins were found to include “more than twice their listed amounts of folic acid” — a concerning ingredient to begin with — which in high amounts can lead to kidney damage for those of all ages, including kids.
Unfortunately, the result is when it comes to children’s vitamins, and in particular those made of gelatin or pectin (i.e., gummies) some vitamins might contribute to the very health problems they were meant to address.
In its article, ConsumerLab explains the reason for this troubling issue. Since gummy vitamins were originally designed as fruit snacks, not to hold nutrients, many manufacturers are now left with issues specific to manufacturing and incorporation processes.
“…Gummies are harder to jam bioavailable nutrients into. Many companies seem to have trouble controlling the amounts of ingredients in each gummy,” Dr. Cooperman, president of ConsumerLab.com, explains, “This leads some manufacturers to put in a lot more of certain vitamins than labeled to ensure the product provides at least 100 percent of the labeled amounts throughout its shelf life,” he adds.
This includes spraying vitamins onto the outside of a gummy to reach passable levels — which can be additionally concerning for parents.
An additional concern is the amount of heavy metals included in numerous children’s gummies. Many children’s gummies are not third-party tested and have been known to include heavy metals in worrisome amounts, leading parents and experts additionally concerned.
Unfortunately, most kids’ vitamins today are sold as gummies — which now seems to be particularly bad news. Additionally many gummies require numerous gummies per day and include copious amounts of added sugar, leading many experts to believe the added sugar in gummy vitamins can end up being more harmful than beneficial.
Is there a better health solution for your child?
After extensive research, many experts now make a similar suggestion — focus on a daily chewable vitamin, which is considerably less likely to deal with the above concerns.

“My 5 year old loves them and asks for them every morning! I feel good about it including a blend of fruits and veggies and I love that the refills don’t include plastic bottles. It’s also really nice that she only has to take one a day — which makes my life so much easier!” – Mandi B.

“I am a firm believer in supplements (vitamins) so when my daughter started to get a little picky with her food and eating almost no veggies, I decided it was time to find a kids vitamin for her. I have bought a few brands of vitamins and with each one, I noticed how it seemed as if she just ate a bowl full of candy. She was bouncing off the walls and she became moody. So after I noticed this, I just decided to stop giving her a daily vitamin. When I first saw an ad for Hiya, I was really excited that it was made with no added sugars and I had to try it. It’s only been a couple of weeks and I am completely in love with the brand, as is my daughter. Every morning she is just so excited to eat her vitamin for the day! I also have peace of mind knowing she is getting her essential vitamins to keep her healthy-especially during these times.” – Amanda K.
